"As human beings, we are surrounded by an environment that is always changing. We are faced with challenges around every corner, and we are called to adapt to the situations that life throws at us. In the past year alone, so much has changed not only for us, but for the entire world. I’m sure that many of you didn’t think we would be gathered here, and yet, things have changed enough for the better that I am able to speak to all of you on this stage..."
"Our eagerness to spread our wings was made bittersweet by the realization that we would soon be leaving the place we have called home for the last couple years of our lives."
Dora Camacho Van de Montel '73 retired from Long Beach Memorial Hospital in California after 42 years. She worked in the cancer wing for about 12 years and then was appointed administrator. She spent 40 years contributing positively to the medical community and made a difference in the lives of many. Dora is now enjoying her retirement.
"Notre Dame has given me very valuable lessons. Ones that extend beyond the classroom. I was a shy kid and I still am; however, the lessons taught here have helped me to strive to reach out to others. And as a result I made friends with those who I now and will continue to consider my family. Because the memories we made together are ones that I hold close to my heart."
"As we continue to grow in our newfound independence and adulthood, we must not forget what NDHS and our families have taught us. Blessed Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger, the foundress of the School Sisters of Notre Dame said this about growth: “All the works of God proceed slowly and in pain; but then, their roots are the sturdier and their flowers the lovelier.” And so while our very last high school semester is not what we envisioned or had hoped for, I believe that this experience has made us step back and focus on what is important, making us stronger and even more determined to take each day and live them with purpose."
"I have never met teachers as passionate as Notre Dame’s and I’m sure my class can agree that these teachers went beyond academics in caring for us. They mentally and spiritually raised us, continuously assuring us that we can depend on them for issues outside of academics at any point of our lives."
"On those days your failures will nearly prevent you from moving along with your dreams, but I challenge you all to have courage every day of your life, to persevere in all you do despite any doubts that may fill your mind, remembering this very quote from our Foundress Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger, “All the works of God proceed slowly and in pain but then, their roots are the sturdier and their flowering the lovelier.”
Notre Dame continues to develop individuals to become the best leaders in our community. Personally, Notre Dame has been instrumental in playing a strong role in both my personal and professional roles. With virtue and knowledge being the foundation of the school, the skills I developed both in the classroom and socially have groomed me to be a respectful and confident individual. The faculty, staff and student body have added a sense of fostering characteristic, which in turn, has molded me to who I am today. Current students and Alumni should maintain a humble heart and a strong sense of Royal pride today and always. Mr. Vince Lombardi said it best when he said, "Leaders are not born, they're made." Those leaders are made at Notre Dame.
I am truly grateful that I have instilled the importance of Family, Love and Humility in the different jobs I have held and continue to hold, because of my upbringing and education. Notre Dame High School is one choice I thank God I made. My daughters Maria Taitano (class of 2009) and Josephine Taitano (class of 2012) also attended Notre Dame. The Class of 86 will always be my Family. While attending Notre Dame, I learned that prayer, being humble, respecting others, and giving of oneself was our mission in life and this was what we were being groomed to be or do.
Notre Dame provided such a nurturing community where I felt comfortable voicing my opinions, sharing new ideas, and really developing my sense of identity. The faculty and students cultivated a spirit of support that I believe I carried with me throughout my post-secondary experiences. There was a true sense of care that I experienced at ND and I strive to transmit this same sense of genuineness to my students. Years after leaving ND, I still feel the same support from the Royal community that I felt as a student-- and I believe that is one of the greatest gifts I've received from ND
