Hafa adai Notre Dame Alumni!

This is your Alumni page where you can find the latest edition of our Alumni Newsletter, read about recent alumni reunions or events, and catch up on Class News or other alumni related announcements.

Notre Dame High School has grown remarkably over the years, structurally, academically and spiritually.  As alumni, we can be proud of our alma mater, and we have a responsibility to uphold the honor and integrity of her name.

Recently, we received two grants from the School Sisters of Notre Dame Central Pacific Province, that have allowed us to refurbish our old science lab and renovate and upgrade an existing classroom into a new chemistry lab equipped for 21st Century learning. Additionally, since 2009 Mobil Oil Guam has contributed to Notre Dame's academic preparedness by donating funds to our Math and Science program.

Notre Dame High School serves to enable students to reach their fullest potential so that, in the words of the School Sisters of Notre Dame, they may “direct their gifts toward building the earth” and becoming the human person they are called to be.

This is your Notre Dame, and as alumni, I encourage you to reconnect, get involved, and be a loyal Royal!

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or would simply like to reconnect with Notre Dame, please feel free to contact me via email at jpjackson@ndhsguam.com or you may call (671) 789-1676 ext. 112.

Alumna Receives Internship at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center

Jacqueline Salas, a 2010 graduate of Notre Dame High School, received an invitation to intern this summer at the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC), under the CURE Program. The CURE program, in collaboration with the DF/HCC works to expose students to the cancer research field. Student interns work under the tutelage of mentor research scientists who do cancer research at hospitals like Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, or at institutions like Harvard Medical School.

Salas applied for the internship in January and received notification in March that she was a finalist. After an interview and selection process that was based on overall GPA, school involvement, and major field of study, Salas was chosen for the ten week paid internship that begins on June 10, 2013.

During the internship, Salas will obtain hands-on experience in a cancer research environment. According to the DF/HCC website, the primary goal of this program “is three-fold: to identify, coach and nurture highly motivated students for potential careers in biomedical cancer research; to increase and enhance students’ skills in research practices, analytical thinking, presentations, and ethics; and to expose students to real time research through hands-on involvement.”

Salas will graduate from Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and International Relations in May 2014.  Currently, Salas is in the process of preliminary interviews with potential graduate schools, Boston College and Brandeis University, and plans on enrolling in a 6-year PhD program in chemistry, with a concentration in Inorganic Analytical Chemistry.

As an alumna of Notre Dame, Salas shares how she was challenged “to go above and beyond what [was] expected of [her in high school].” Salas explains that “The school, faculty, and staff [were] influential in helping me get to where I am today by providing me with great support in addition to providing me with a great education. Not only was I educated in the academic disciplines, but I was educated as a whole person. ND has cultivated characteristics of leadership, character, and scholarship, and this has made me stand out here at Regis College and even beyond that as a recipient of the 2013 Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center CURE Program Internship.”

In addition to being a scholarship recipient, Salas was accepted to travel to Villa El Salvador Peru in March, and this summer she will be one out of ten students selected as an Erat Scholar, traveling to three countries in Europe.  According to Salas, "I would have never dreamt of doing these things or achieving such things without the foundation that Notre Dame has provided me."
